Jessica + Nils
6.2.12 • Lord Thompson Manor, Thompson
Each of the tables at the wedding reception of Jessica Selander, M.D., and Nils Nankin, M.D., who said their “I dos” on June 2, 2012, at Lord Thompson Manor, held a bottle with a message inside. That’s because Nils, originally from Laguna Beach, Calif., had popped the question to Jessica, a Stratford native, via a proposal placed in a floating wine bottle while the pair were on a gondola ride in Newport Beach. The hopelessly romantic bride-to-be decided to carry the theme through to her wedding day by asking friends and family to share their own “love stories,” which she had printed and sealed in bottles placed at each table for wedding guests to read. A tag attached to each read: “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.”
“It was important to me to recognize where we came from,” says Jessica. “It’s the history and love that stand behind us that brought us here today. Everyone played a part.”
The bride was resplendent in a fanciful mermaid-style Pronovias gown from Mariella Creations in Rocky Hill. An ardent fan of all things pink, she carried a blushing bouquet of peonies designed by Flowers and Design by Jackie @ Lord Thompson Manor. Woven into the bouquet were the pearls her grandmother wore on her wedding day and her grandfather’s wedding band. A defining moment of the day, Jessica says, was “when I turned the corner and saw a bed of pink rose petals for my aisle and my [soon-to-be] husband waiting for me at the end.”
The happy couple, who now call Redondo Beach, Calif., home, had a blast taking photos with Victoria Souza Photography against the backdrop of Lord Thompson’s 40 gorgeous acres. A huge bouquet of pink and white balloons for the exuberant bride to play with were especially fun. “They were just breathtaking,” says Jessica, a practicing ob-gyn whose groom is completing his radiology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. “When I saw them, I grabbed them and took off running across the field. I just couldn’t help myself.”
Toasts were shared by the champagne bar, Jessica and her dad danced to Heartland’s “I Loved Her First” and, at the very end of the evening, laughter and s’mores were savored by the dancing flames of an outdoor fire pit.
Sums up Jessica: “It was the perfect wedding . . . for me.”
