Katie + Rob
9.4.11 • Winvian, Morris
Ever hear the saying, “The couple that plays together, stays together?” Well, Katie Allen and Rob Bruce like to play games—board games, in fact. So it seemed only natural that when Rob decided to surprise Katie with a weekend getaway (another of their favored pastimes), he asked the big question via the game Agricola, which Katie calls their “favorite dorky board game.” Their weekend away was at Winvian in Morris and the “winning” card that Katie drew was called “The Bride to Be”—a role she played to perfection for the nine months leading up to her and Rob’s Sept. 4, 2011, wedding celebrated (but of course) at Winvian.
“What set Winvian apart was its ability to create a whole wedding weekend for us,” says the bride. Katie, originally from Dallas, and Rob, who grew up in Williamsburg, Va., met at the hedge fund where both work in Westport, and had guests coming from near and far for their nuptials. The posh 113-acre country retreat has “almost a summer camp feel to it,” says Katie, with “fun little cottages” for guests to overnight in. “We really wanted it to be a fun getaway for all our family and friends,” she adds.
The tone was set via a custom board game invitation suite designed by Ceci New York. Event planner Lisa Light of Destination Bride in Chatham, N.Y., helped the couple pack the long Labor Day weekend with activities ranging from hot-air balloon rides and a canoe trip to an inflatable obstacle course, and visits from fabulous food trucks Super Duper Weenie of Fairfield and Wafels & Dinges from New York City.
On Sunday, the First Church of Bethlehem was the site of the traditional religious ceremony the couple desired. There were no tears from the bride as she came down the aisle in her Vera Wang (the first dress she tried on turned out to be “the” dress) carrying blooms from Azalea Floral Design in Plainville. “I was just so happy,” says Katie. “And excited, too.” That excitement spilled over to her snazzy black-tie-optional reception back at Winvian, the spectacular fireworks display that followed dinner, and dancing with her new husband long into the night. Sounding like every happy bride before her, she says, “It was perfect.”
